Here's how you can reduce the risk of becoming a rape victim

1.  Be aware and alert. Note the environment you are in and the people who are around you.

2.  Try to stay in well-lit areas as much as you can.

3.  Walk carefully on the side of the street that faces the traffic.

4.  While walking on the pavement, stay close to the curb.  Avoid doorways, bushes, alleys or dark areas.

5.  Do not walk alone at night and avoid areas where there are few people or areas that are too quiet.

6.  What you wear should give you the freedom of movement should you need to move quickly or to run. Always keep a pair of flat shoes handy. (Your stiletto heels may hinder you from running but they act as handy weapons if needed).

7.  If you believe you are being followed stop at the nearest store, house, factory etc. And ask to use the phone or seek someone’s assistance.

8.  If you are in trouble, attract help any way you possibly can. Scream as loudly as you can (men respond quicker to a woman’s scream than any other sound). If you are carrying a whistle, use it. If you are carrying pepper sauce mace or any other protection device use it and get away as quickly as you can.

9.   Always let someone you can trust know where you are. Be sure that this person will be able to assist you in case of trouble.

10. Make it a point to call home and inform relatives when you leave work or wherever you are before you are beginning your journey for home or work.

11. Work out several routes you can take to get back and forth to where you have to go. Time it, work out all the things that can go wrong, then re-time it giving family members the times. Alternate your routes often.

12. Keep a phonecard or coins for payphones handy. Keep the access of important numbers easy. Know where you can call from, or get word to someone. Note locations of phones and the nearest police stations.

13. Be wary of people who stop you for directions or those who approach you for personal information.

14.  If attacked try not to panic.  Keep a clear head and try to outwit your aggressor. Remember he’s just as scared as you are or more so. So surprise him or her.

15.   If and when possible take self defense classes.

ALWAYS REMEMBER:

  • BE AWARE: of anyone suspicious
  • BE ALERT: in strange surroundings.
  • BE CAREFUL: of potential threats
